A room with a view explores the aesthetics of disappearance through the lenses of six female artists based in Hong Kong. Curated by Carol Chow Pui Ha, a researcher and lecturer at the School of Journalism and Communication, Chinese University of Hong Kong, the exhibition takes as its point of departure Ackbar Abbas’ text Hong Kong: Culture and the Politics of Disappearance (1997), in which he describes how buildings and spaces in Hong Kong have come to signify what no longer exists. Spanning photography, video and installation, the works capture and reconstruct vanishing identities and spaces.

About the Artist
Lau Wai’s 劉衛 (b.1982, Hong Kong) photography explores traces of human presence and identity in historical sites, domestic and urban spaces. In 2014 she presented a solo exhibition in Staging Encounters: 10 Years of Contemporary Photography in China at the Lianzhou International Photo Festival, China.
She has exhibited in group shows including Adrift, OCAT Shenzhen, China (2016); Imagine There’s No Country, Above Us Only Our Cities, Para Site, Hong Kong (2015); The 7th Three Shadows Photography Award, Three Shadows Photography Art Centre, Beijing (2015); The 6th Dali International Photography Exhibition, Dali, China, (2015); Asia Photography And Image Center, Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, Japan (2015); Farewell to Experience, The 9th Lianzhou International Photo Festival, China (2013); and G.O.L.D., Voxfire Gallery, Hong Kong (2012).
Upon graduating from Goldsmiths College, University of London with a BA (Hons) Fine Art in 2007 she received the Warden’s Art Prize.
