The first book of the Rhythm Series is Daegu était un grand étang (DAEGU USED TO BE A GIANT POND) by France-based photographer Eom Dohyeon.
The book is based on the photographer’s visits to Daegu in 2021 and 2022. The first series of photographs in the book were taken in 2021 and provide a glimpse into the artist’s brainstorming process as she explored themes related to Daegu. The second series of photographs is the main body of the book, which is a full-fledged observation of Daegu with the theme of ‘pond’.
In this series, which is part travel diary, part photo essay, the artist captures stories and scenes related to Daegu ponds that have existed but do not exist, and those that did not exist but exist in the present. In this exploration of the blurring of boundaries between ponds and lakes, reservoirs and water, Daegu is not a dull and uninteresting city, a politically conservative neighbourhood, nor a region of Samsung and apples, but rather one of many fluid cities where fictionalised pasts and presents play out in people’s memories.
