“At the end of 2019, during a residency in Northeast China, I spent my time driving along the Yalu River. It’s a natural boundary between two worlds. While photographing the scenery on this side, I kept catching glimpses of the country across the water. By a stroke of luck, I decided to cross over and document North Korea firsthand.
It was an unforgettable trip. At first, I thought this whole project would be centered only on the river itself, but the photos from North Korea ended up being the perfect counterpart to the landscapes I’d captured in China. The two sets of images echoed each other in ways I hadn’t expected.”
The design concept of this photography book adopts a large-scale tabloid format, specifically chosen to showcase landscape and topographical imagery through an expansive visual field. By embracing this form, the work deliberately eschews the conventional hardbound or ornate aesthetics typical of the medium. Much like a traditional newspaper, the cover features a concise introduction, while the interior is woven with the author’s personal travelogues. These writings chronicle a journey of residency and the singular experience of traversing North Korea.
Following a year of editorial collaboration that began in late 2023, the project was self-published in 2025 in a limited first edition of 100 copies. Currently distributed through both physical and digital channels in Taiwan, the publication will also be featured at the 2026 Kyotographie Photo Book Market in partnership with “SpringBaoPress.” Furthermore, a solo exhibition of the same title is slated to debut in Taichung, Taiwan in late 2026.
