Notation(s) is a limited-edition artist’s book of 100 copies that traces how the artist organizes and understands her sensations and imaginings in response to scenes she photographs in daily life by visually notating them through geometric shapes.
The work begins with photographs where something lingers within perception—a slight divergence between what is there and the artist’s inner sensations. Rather than letting these moments pass, the artist translates them into visual notations composed of simple geometric shapes.
Each notation diagram is created by selecting and arranging forms from a set of sixty simple shapes. These are not fixed interpretations, but open structures that register instability, curiosity, and fleeting questions.
The book consists of one hundred photographs and corresponding notations. It is structured as gatefold pages: notations appear on the outside, while photographs are hidden inside and revealed when opened. By concealing the photographic image and foregrounding a structured visual language, the work introduces a slight distance from the scene.
The cover is composed of thirty thin sheets layered together. On its flaps, shapes, names, and page numbers are listed, forming a parallel structure. A fold-out reference page allows the reader to compare the notation diagrams with the set of shapes while moving through the book.
Although each copy contains identical content, each copy has a different title on its cover, accompanied by a corresponding notation diagram. Each title points to one photograph, creating multiple entries.
The book can also stand upright, allowing it to be experienced both as a reading object and as a sculptural form.
Notation(s) was developed through the 2024 PHOTOBOOK AS OBJECT workshop at Reminders Photography Stronghold, Tokyo, mentored by Yumi Goto and Jan Rosseel. Each copy is signed and numbered.
