Jay Lim (b.2000) is a Singaporean visual artist working in photography, book arts, and installation. His practice, situated at the intersection of photography theory and queer theory, examines how images can be used to negotiate the invisibilised realities of people who exist outside societal norms.

Employing the concept of inscrutable looking, a way of looking at photographs to sense hidden and speculative narratives, Lim’s works position photography as a democratic mode of communication that extends beyond spoken language, inviting viewers to question their assumptions about marginalised communities and complicate the narratives imposed upon them. 

His works have been nominated for the 2025 Photo London x Hahnemüehle Student Award, shortlisted for the 2024 and 2025 editions of Encontros da Imagem Photobook Award, featured in The Guardian as part of Photomonth x Mile End 2025, Longlisted for the Aesthetica Art Prize 2026, among other accolades. Lim holds a First-Class Honours degree in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography from the London College of Communication (2025).

He also runs Quiet Press: a self-publishing platform dedicated to quiet photographic storytelling.
