Identity is never fixed. It is shaped and reshaped through relationships, memory, desire and cultural expectations. States of Becoming brings together seven artists who explore how photography participates in the making of identity across gender, sexuality, adolescence, family and belonging.

Moving between imagined communities, teenage intimacy, queer love, self-fashioning and personal memory, the works reveal identity as something continually performed and negotiated. From Genevieve Chua’s androgynous community and Sean Lee Puay Yang’s fleeting portraits of young love to Jay Lim and Charmaine Poh’s explorations of queer intimacy and partnership, photography becomes more than a record of who we are.

Bringing together portraiture, staged photography and autobiographical narratives, States of Becoming asks how we come to see ourselves, how others see us, and who we might yet become.
