“Transitus Naturalis” is a photo book that explores the transformations of the landscape over time, revealing its transition to landscaping and its complex intersections with history, culture and power. Through images of postcards, stamps and authorial photographs, Elaine Pessoa deconstructs the idea of fixed landscapes, addressing historical and symbolic displacements that shaped the Brazilian imagination, from colonial exploration to the present day. The work questions how landscaping projects, botanical gardens and urban spaces reconfigured the natural, reflecting both the domestication of nature and the aesthetic celebration of biodiversity. Using critical visual elements, such as gold, the author highlights narratives of exploration and transformation, connecting past and present. More than a record, “Transitus Naturalis” is an invitation to reflect on our relationship with the landscape, addressing the tension between preservation and exploration. Poetic and critical, the work challenges us to reconsider the meaning of inhabiting and transforming a rich, dynamic and vulnerable ecosystem.
