Liza Ambrossio (1993, Mexico) is a transdisciplinary artist whose work revolves around themes of the macabre and cryptic, whereby archival photographs, paintings, performance, intervention, installations, videos, psychology, lucid nightmares, science fiction and psychomagic come together in a heady mix.
She began her artistic practice at the age of 16 when she asked a helper from her mother’s house to steal the photographs from the family albums, in search for traces and evidence of a dark past. After the suicide of her roommate and best friend from adolescence, she inherited his job as a “nota roja” or press photographer, covering murders, accidents, and torture by drug traffickers at dawn for a local newspaper.
Ambrosso has exhibited works internationally, including the Somerset House in the UK, the Palazzo Palmieri and the Ex Mattatoio-Rome in Italy, the Göteborgs Konstmuseum in Sweden, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MACQ) in Mexico, and most recently in 2022, at the Manuel Rivera Ortiz Foundation during the Rencontres de la photographie de Arles in France. Her accolades include the FNAC Nuevo Talento award in Spain and Voies Off in Arles, France, in 2018, the Flash Forward in Canada, the PhEST in Italy, and the PHmuseum New Generation Grant in the UK in 2019. She had been nominated for the Prix Pictet in Switzerland, the Prix of Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO), and the Arts Electronica in the U.S. In 2020 she was awarded an annual photography residence from the Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac in París, France. She now lives and works across Spain, France, and Mexico.
