The man-made world is wholly created from the earth’s materials and when the items are no longer required, they are returned to the earth as waste. Cycles is an ongoing UK based project that looks at the methods and results of an accelerated climate of consumerism. This series was inspired by a sustainability report published by the New Economics Forum in 2006, concluding that the UK uses over three times their share of global resources.
About the Artist
Simon Carruthers’ photography explores the issues concerning man’s impact on the land – individually and collectively – and the decisions and actions undertaken by man in the name of progress. Motivated by the increasingly globalising society and the implications it has on urban and rural landscapes and the individual, his work sets out to document the consequences of increased homogenisation and to investigate the nature/culture conflict.
