The 9th SIPF Photobook Showcase celebrates the photobook medium’s role as a platform for image-makers in highlighting personal, political, and cultural anecdotes, while spotlighting the creative force of photobooks as a unique instrument of artistic expression.
In a world increasingly shaped by digital content, this exhibition reaffirms the photobook’s tactile power—transcending language and culture to offer multi-layered narratives of our times. Through these varied showcases, viewers are invited to engage with the art of storytelling through paper, imagery, and the rich textures of contemporary photography.
For a deeper understanding of the current photobook culture in Asia, SIPF has invited Three Shadows Photography Art Centre [CN] and Lightbox Photobook Library [TW] to present a travelling photobook showcases.
Space on Paper is an annual photobook programme at the Jimei x Arles International Photo Festival, emphasising the significance of photobooks as a medium for artistic expression. From its open call submissions, 24 books were shortlisted and exhibited in the 9th edition of the festival in Jimei, Xiamen. This is the first time the exhibition has been presented outside of China, with the aim of engaging readers with the creativity and stories of emerging image-makers in China.
Lightbox Photo Library presents Photobooks of Taiwan: The Ongoing Democratic Conversation, focusing on 18 photobooks that reflect the evolving themes and dialogues in Taiwanese photography from the 2000s to the present. This showcase not only highlights individual works but also raises broader awareness of the cultural and social contexts influencing contemporary photography in Taiwan.
The 9th SIPF Photobook Showcase features a selection of 48 shortlisted entries from a total of 220 applications from over 61 countries, selected by this year’s jury members – Tanvi Mishra [IN], Maarten Schilt [NL], David Campany [UK], Gwen Lee [SG], Yanyou Yuan Di [CN], Erik Kessels [NL] and Ang Song Nian [SG].
