Mazu, a deity said to have come from China to Taiwan three hundred years ago, was revered by Taiwanese as the protector of fishermen and sailors. Today, she is seen as the guardian deity of the entire island of Taiwan.
In 2022, when U.S. House Speaker Nancy Patricia Pelosi visited Taiwan. In response to her visit, China conducted military exercises in the Taiwan Strait. During this period, the artist wrote postcards to Mazu, asking for her protection of Taiwan. The photobook Mazu, presents a series of postcards written by the artist to Mazu.
Mazu, reflects the artist’s exploration of issues such as the psychological and physical burdens caused by China’s military actions and the identity crisis faced by Taiwanese people.
